Intro to Documentary Film- we will be watching several documentaries over the next week or so. Remember, everything’s an argument, right? Well, documentaries are basically just argument essays in a film version. We are only hitting the tip of the iceberg with documentary analysis here in this class. Check out some film classes in college if you are interested!

Here is your packet. If you lose the one I give you in class, then you must print one out.

“Good my lord, pardon me, Though I am bound to every act of duty  I am not bound to that all slaves are free to.”

“Believe me, I had rather have lost my purse full of crusadoes. And but my noble Moor     Is true of mind and made of no such baseness as jealous creatures are, it were enough     To put him to ill thinking.”

“By heaven, thou echo’st me/ As if there was some monster in thy thought/ Too hideous to be shown.”

“O beware,my lord, of jealousy!/ It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock/ The meat it feeds on.”

“I am glad I have found this napkin./ This was her first remembrance from the Moor.”

“I durst, my lord, to wager she is honest,/ Lay down my soul at stake.”

“I will be hanged if some eternal villain,/ Some busy and insinuating rogue,/ Some cogging, cozening slave, to get some office,/ Have not devised this slander.”

“ ‘Very well’ ‘Go to!’ I cannot go to, man,/ nor ‘tis not very well!”

Speech to the Troops at Tilbury

Read the packet. Using their notes annotate YOUR copy of the speech. Yes, I want you to highlight and note the things they mention about her speech. This is modeling the kind of annotations you will be making and what you will be looking for when you do a rhetorical analysis.

It will help to watch this recreation of the speech from the 2005 miniseries Elizabeth I. Helen Mirren stars as the Queen.
